Amalia is a licensed clinical psychologist. She earned her Masters and Doctoral degrees from Arizona State University (ASU) where she received specialized training in developing and evaluating preventive interventions to be used in low-income communities and she studied the impact of acculturation on parenting across multiple generations of Latino families in the US. Amalia has worked as an assessor, therapist, supervisor and administrator of clinical programs across a variety of clinics.
Her approach in each of these endeavors has been one of building on families', supervisees' or program strengths. She has over 20 years of experience working with families of diverse backgrounds, both in the clinic and in their homes. Amalia believes in identifying the needs of the community, and working collaboratively with teams to try to meet those needs. Amalia strongly believes that reading and learning empowers children to achieve their dreams and goals.
A native of Nicaragua, Amalia speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French. She is also a writer and a translator who has provided professional English-Spanish translation service to the World Bank.
